China Tourist Visa Document Checklist for U.S. Applicants

A useful checklist starts with the items nearly every applicant needs, then branches for previous Chinese visas, former nationality, minors, name changes, and requests made during online review.

The core preparation checklist

• Current passport: the original passport for the physical-submission stage, plus a clear image of its biographical data page for online review.
• Online application: a complete application in the official COVA system, using details that exactly match the passport and supporting records.
• Compliant photo: a recent image meeting the specifications shown in COVA; do not rely on a casual phone crop if the portal rejects it.
• Proof of lawful U.S. stay when applicable: non-U.S. citizens applying in the United States should prepare the immigration-status evidence requested by the mission.
• Tourism-purpose evidence requested in your case: answer COVA truthfully and upload the itinerary, accommodation, transport, or invitation information the portal or reviewing office asks for.
• Submission-stage items: the confirmation or application documents, physical passport, payment method, and delivery/return materials specified by the assigned mission after preliminary review.

Documents that depend on your history

Previous Chinese visa or residence permit

Prepare a readable copy of the most recent visa or permit and the passport page containing it. If it is in an old passport, retain that passport. A March 2026 Reddit question illustrates the recurring confusion: applicants may see multiple upload slots or an “optional” label even though the explanatory text applies to their history. The text of the official request—not the community answer—controls.

Former Chinese nationality or birth in China

These cases can require previous Chinese passports, naturalization or citizenship evidence, and documents explaining name changes. They should not be treated as a standard first-time tourist application.

Minor applicants

Birth certificates, parental passports or identification, consent documents, and proof of the parents’ status may be requested. The exact combination depends on family circumstances and the mission’s current instructions.

Name or identity changes

If your current passport name differs from older passports, visas, birth records, or invitations, prepare the legal name-change or marriage documentation that connects the records.

Do U.S. tourist applicants still need flights, hotels, or an invitation?

This is one of the most common Reddit questions because users copy checklists from other countries or older consular pages. Requirements are not globally interchangeable. A document demanded by a visa center in India does not automatically become a U.S. requirement, and a U.S. applicant’s experience at one mission does not bind another case.

The safe approach is:

1. Use the current U.S. embassy/consulate instructions and the live COVA prompts for your assigned jurisdiction.
2. Do not buy a questionable invitation letter because an unrelated applicant needed one.
3. Do not hide or invent trip details merely because a particular upload field appears optional.
4. Keep reasonable itinerary and accommodation information available in case the reviewing office asks for it.

Community consensus is most useful as an early-warning system: it tells you which fields confuse people and which extra documents have been requested. It cannot override the reviewing authority.

Five consistency checks before submission

1. Your name, passport number, birth date, and nationality match the passport exactly.
2. Your travel purpose matches the visa category and all supporting statements.
3. Dates do not conflict across employment, education, residence, prior travel, and itinerary sections.
4. Every uploaded page is complete, upright, readable, and belongs to the correct applicant.
5. Previous Chinese visas, former passports, former nationality, and name changes are disclosed where asked.
