China Q2 vs. S2 Visa: Which Family Visit Category Do You Need?

Choose Q2 when visiting a Chinese citizen or Chinese permanent resident, and S2 when visiting a qualifying foreign family member working or studying in China or for another private matter.

Direct answer: The inviter's status usually determines the short-term family category. Use Q2 to visit a relative who is a Chinese citizen residing in China or a foreigner with Chinese permanent residence. Use S2 to visit a qualifying foreign family member who is staying or residing in China for work, study or another eligible purpose, or for another documented private matter. Do not select the category only because one seems easier or offers a preferred validity.

Use Q2 for Chinese or permanent-resident inviters

The Q2 file centers on the Chinese citizen's identity document or the foreign inviter's Chinese permanent-residence card, a complete invitation and proof or statement of the family relationship. The intended visit is short term within the issued stay.

A foreign spouse of a Chinese citizen does not automatically become the inviter for Q2 unless that person independently holds Chinese permanent residence. Identify whose status actually supports the invitation.

Use S2 for foreign workers or students

For S2, the person being visited is a foreigner in China, commonly for work or study. The file should show that person's passport and valid stay or residence status, the invitation and the qualifying family relationship.

S2 can also cover other private matters, but that is not a blank substitute for an unsupported family category. The nature of the private matter must be documented.

Check the entire relationship path

If both a Chinese relative and a foreign worker or student could invite, compare which person most directly matches the real visit and which relationship can be proved clearly. Keep names, addresses and dates consistent across COVA and the invitation.
