Dual Citizen Applying for a China Visa: Which Passport Should You Use?

A dual citizen should use one consistent travel passport for COVA, visa issuance and entry, disclose nationality history truthfully, and resolve any possible Chinese-nationality issue first.

Direct answer: If neither nationality may be Chinese, choose the passport you will consistently use for the China trip and complete COVA exactly from that passport while disclosing other nationality and passport history where requested. If you were born in China, previously held Chinese nationality or have a Chinese parent, do not simply choose the more convenient foreign passport: China does not recognize dual nationality for Chinese nationals, so the mission must first determine whether a visa, Chinese passport or travel document is appropriate.

For two non-Chinese nationalities

Compare entry eligibility, passport validity and intended itinerary, then select one passport as the China travel identity. The passport number in COVA, airline reservation, visa and Chinese entry record should remain consistent.

Possessing a second passport does not permit false answers. List other nationality, previous passport and travel information when the form requests it, and retain copies in case the visa office asks for clarification.

When Chinese nationality may be involved

The Nationality Law states that China does not recognize dual nationality for Chinese nationals. It also contains specific rules for children born abroad to Chinese parents and for loss of nationality after settling abroad and voluntarily acquiring foreign nationality.

Do not decide nationality from ethnicity, birthplace or a community answer alone. Provide prior Chinese passports, naturalization records, parents' passports and permanent-residence evidence required for the individual facts.

Keep the selected passport consistent

A visa is linked to the passport in which it is issued. If the passport is replaced or personal details change, verify whether the old visa remains usable or a new application is necessary before travel.
