Can You Apply for a New China Visa While Your Current Visa Is Still Valid?
Do not assume early renewal is allowed: current Los Angeles instructions say an otherwise usable prior visa with more than six months remaining will not be replaced.
Check whether the old visa is actually usable
Read the visa's expiration date, remaining entries, category and duration of each stay. Also check whether the passport and visa are undamaged and whether name, gender, date of birth and nationality remain the same on a renewed passport.
A valid visa in an expired passport may remain usable with the new passport when the specified personal information has not changed and the travel purpose still matches. Carrying two passports is different from applying for an unnecessary replacement.
When a new application may be appropriate
A changed purpose can require a different category—for example, moving from tourism to a qualifying family visit, study or work route. Loss, damage or changed passport identity data can also make the prior visa unusable. Document the actual reason instead of describing the application as a routine renewal.
If the old visa has less than six months left, the Los Angeles instructions list that as a situation in which a new application may proceed. This is not a promise that every office will issue a particular validity, category or number of entries.
Avoid duplicate or conflicting visa records
Upload or present the prior visa and the passport that contains it when the responsible office requests them. Do not conceal an unexpired visa, report it lost when it is available, or assume an unstamped old visa remains usable after a later visa or residence status has been issued.
