China X1 and X2 Student Visa Guide

X1 is generally for study exceeding 180 days; X2 is for study lasting no more than 180 days. The school’s admission and student-status documents should determine the route, not a guess based on the course name.

Official baseline: For foreign higher-education X1 students, current Embassy instructions list a JW201 or JW202 confirmation form and an admission letter. X2 requires an admission notice and, when available, a DQ short-term student information form.

X1 documents

Confirmation Form for Study in China, Form JW201 or JW202.
Admission letter from the school or other authorized institution.
Applicable passport, COVA, residence, prior-visa and U.S.-status documents.

For foreign elementary or secondary students, current instructions refer to the Confirmation Form for Elementary Stage Students Study in China. Students residing long-term in China for family reunion may have a different route, so confirm with the school and reviewing mission.

X2 documents

Admission notice issued by the school or authorized entity.
Information Form for Foreign Students’ Short-term Visit, Form DQ, if available.
The same applicable basic COVA documents.

Check the school documents

Names, passport number, program, school, study location and dates should agree across the admission notice, JW/DQ record and COVA. Ask the school to correct a substantive error through its authorized process; do not edit an issued document yourself.

After X1 entry

X1 is generally an entry visa for long-term study. The holder normally completes school registration and applies for a study-type residence permit after arrival, often within 30 days, subject to the visa annotation and current local requirements. Ask the school about health examination, accommodation registration and residence-permit timing before travel.

Common applicant questions

A short course is not automatically X2 if the official school documents support a different arrangement, and an admission email may not replace the required formal record. Reddit experiences about timing or document formats are not an official rule; the school and reviewing Chinese authority control the case.
