China COVA Application Guide for U.S. Applicants
COVA is the online starting point for a Chinese visa application. Accurate answers and readable uploads matter because a submitted form cannot be edited while it awaits consular review.
Before you start
- Confirm the correct Chinese mission for your U.S. residence.
- Prepare your current passport, prior Chinese visas or passports, U.S. status evidence when applicable, itinerary and visa-category documents.
- Collect five years of work history, highest education and family information.
- Use complete, clear and evenly lit image files in the upload fields; follow the portal's current file instructions.
Complete the form carefully
Enter full employer names rather than abbreviations. If a required family field genuinely does not apply, provide the explanation requested by the system. List intended entry dates and Chinese cities consistently with the supporting documents. The official guide says the system accepts applications with intended entry dates within the next 90 days.
Uploads and declarations
Red-dashed upload fields are mandatory. The official guide says the applicable fields accept image files rather than PDF files. First-time applicants, former Chinese citizens, applicants with a Chinese parent, and non-U.S. citizens in the United States may see additional evidence requirements. Use “Anything else you want to declare” for a relevant explanation rather than hiding an inconsistency.
After submission
- Review every answer before submitting; the form cannot be changed during consular review.
- Monitor the account for correction or additional-document requests.
- When the status permits passport submission, follow the mission-specific instructions and retain the barcode information page.
- Check the visa immediately after the passport is returned.
