Previous Chinese Visa in an Old Passport: What to Upload and Bring
A prior Chinese visa does not become irrelevant just because it is inside an expired or replaced passport. COVA asks about visa history, and the physical old passport may matter at submission.
What to prepare before starting COVA
- Your current passport bio page and the blank visa pages requested by the portal.
- The old passport bio page that identifies the holder.
- A clear image of the most recent Chinese visa or residence permit.
- The old passport itself, especially when the visa or permit remains valid.
- Approximate issue details for earlier visas when the form asks for application history.
Keep each image complete and readable. Do not crop away the passport number, issue place, validity dates, visa category, entries, or duration of stay. If COVA provides separate upload fields, follow the label shown in your account rather than combining unrelated pages into an unreadable collage.
What if the upload field says “optional”?
An “optional” label can mean that the field does not apply to every applicant. It does not erase an instruction that applies to your own history. A recent r/Chinavisa question described exactly this confusion: the applicant had an expired X2 visa in an old passport while the portal showed an optional previous-visa slot. Treat community answers as experience only; the reviewing authority’s live request controls.
If the old passport or visa is missing
Do not answer “no” simply because you cannot locate the document. Disclose the prior visa truthfully. The current application materials include statement forms for applicants who cannot provide previous visa information. Explain what was issued, where and approximately when, and why the original or copy is unavailable. The reviewing office may ask for a signed statement or other evidence.
Can an existing visa be used with a new passport?
That is a different question from applying for a new visa. Whether a visa in an old passport remains usable can depend on nationality, whether the visa is still valid, whether personal details changed, the condition of both passports, and current entry rules. Confirm directly with the issuing Chinese mission or border authority before travel; do not assume that another traveler’s experience applies to you.
Submission-stage checklist
- Wait until COVA shows “Passport to be submitted.”
- Print or retain the application information page with barcode.
- Bring or send the current passport using the case-specific instructions.
- Include the old passport when the instructions or reviewing officer require the original.
- After return, check the new visa details immediately.
