How Long Does China Visa Preliminary Review Take in COVA?

The Chinese Embassy does not publish a guaranteed COVA preliminary-review duration; monitor the status, correct returned items and count official visa processing only after passport submission.

Direct answer: There is no published guaranteed number of days for COVA preliminary review in the current U.S. instructions. Watch the account for corrections or supplemental requests. The published four-day regular and three-day express averages begin only after the physical passport is submitted.

Read the status literally

Submitted means the online file was sent, not that a visa was approved. A returned or modification status requires the applicant to open the comments, correct the requested fields or uploads and resubmit. “Passport to be submitted” is the point at which the applicant or agent follows the visa office’s passport instructions.

Do not rely only on email. Sign in to the same COVA account and check the application record. Save the application number and barcode information page, but do not treat either as a travel document.

Why review time varies

Jurisdiction, application volume, category evidence, image quality, name history, prior Chinese nationality and case-specific verification can affect the online stage. A community report from another mission or visa category is not a service standard.

If the review appears stalled, first confirm that the application was actually submitted to the correct mission and that no return message is waiting. Then use the contact method published by that office, with a concise application number and issue description.

Do not mail early

The Embassy says passport submission occurs after the form shows the passport-submission status. Mailing before that point can separate the passport from an incomplete online file and create avoidable handling risk.

Once authorized, follow the current office instructions for barcode page, originals, payment and return. The official processing estimate begins at passport submission, but additional review can still extend the case.
