What “Passport to Be Submitted” Means in COVA
This status means online preliminary review has reached the passport-submission stage. It does not mean the visa has been approved or that every later document request is finished.
Prepare the submission packet
- The original passport used in COVA.
- The application information page showing the status and barcode.
- Any original documents specifically requested during review.
- An old passport containing a still-valid Chinese visa or residence permit, when applicable.
- For applicable former Chinese citizens, the required original Chinese passport.
- For Q1 or S1, the original family-relationship certificate required for verification.
Check before handing over the passport
Confirm the passport number matches COVA, the passport remains valid with sufficient blank pages, all review messages were addressed and the correct office controls the residence address. Keep copies of the passport bio page, barcode page and every item submitted.
Applicant or agent?
The Embassy FAQ says either the applicant or an agent may submit after preliminary review. It also says the Embassy itself does not provide mailing service. A private mail-in assistance workflow therefore means the customer ships documents to the independent service, whose agent follows the responsible office’s submission process; it does not mean mailing an application directly to the Embassy.
Is an appointment or fingerprint visit required?
The current Embassy FAQ describes walk-in submission after this status and states applicants are not generally required to appear for fingerprint collection. A consular officer may still require an in-person interview based on the case, so follow the account and office instructions.
What happens next?
Processing generally begins from passport submission. Keep monitoring COVA and communications. An estimated pickup date is the earliest estimate, not a guarantee; collection should wait until the status says “Passport to be collected.”
