Can You Use a Q2 Visa to Visit an Unmarried Partner in China?
A girlfriend, boyfriend or fiancé is not included in the published Q-visa family-member list solely because of that relationship; tourism normally points to an L visa.
Who the published Q category covers
For Q1 family reunion, the current U.S. instructions list spouses, parents, sons, daughters, spouses of sons or daughters, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren and parents-in-law. Q2 is for a short visit to relatives who are Chinese citizens residing in China or foreigners with Chinese permanent residence.
A romantic relationship may be genuine and long-term, but it does not create one of those listed legal family relationships. An invitation letter from a partner cannot by itself change the applicant's category.
When an L visa is the clearer match
If you plan sightseeing, personal travel and time with a partner, describe the genuine tourist purpose under L. Current U.S. instructions do not require the standard flight, hotel, itinerary or invitation documents for an ordinary L application, although the visa office may request case-specific evidence.
Use accurate lodging, contact and travel details in COVA. Do not invent hotel bookings or conceal that you will stay with a partner if the form asks where you will stay.
Do not force a family category
If you later marry, the spouse relationship may support a Q category, but the correct category, duration and documents still depend on the purpose at the time of that application. Engagement alone should not be represented as marriage.
eChinaVisa can compare L, Q and other categories, pre-review the form and supporting documents, and coordinate the submission workflow. We cannot redefine a relationship, guarantee a visa category or promise approval.
Frequently asked questions
Is a fiancé considered a spouse for Q2?
No. Engagement is not marriage, and fiancé is not listed as a Q-visa family-member relationship.
Can my Chinese partner write an invitation for my L visa?
An invitation may explain the visit if useful, but current U.S. L instructions do not list it as a standard required document; truthful COVA answers still matter.
Should I hide that I am visiting a partner?
No. Select the category that matches the real purpose and answer lodging, contact and travel questions truthfully.
