Teaching English in China: Do You Need TEFL and Two Years of Experience?

U.S.-based teaching applicants can avoid the wrong checklist by separating language-teacher experience exemptions, certificate recognition and the later Z visa filing.

Direct answer: Not necessarily both. Shanghai’s published foreign-language-teacher criteria allow specified qualifications to exempt the work-experience requirement; Beijing guidance also identifies an exemption route involving qualifications such as TEFL. That does not mean every TEFL course qualifies, or that a certificate replaces a bachelor’s degree or guarantees a work permit. Ask the hiring school to confirm your exact route and evidence with the accepting authority before paying for additional training.

Check the occupation being filed, not only the job advertisement

Ask HR whether the application is for a foreign-language teacher or another teaching occupation. A post teaching English, a music-teaching role delivered in English and an administrative job at an international school should not automatically share the same qualification analysis. Put the actual duties, age group and work location in the employer’s review file.

Shanghai’s language-teacher standard generally calls for teaching the applicant’s native language, a bachelor’s degree or above and two years of language-teaching experience. It lists education, language or teaching degrees, home-country teaching qualifications and recognized international language-teaching certificates as experience-exemption grounds. Keep that specific rule separate from a generic summary of Category B eligibility.

Get the certificate checked before buying another course

Send HR the full certificate, issuing organization, course title and available training-hour or assessment information. Ask which document they intend to rely on and whether the accepting office recognizes it for this application. A course provider’s “visa accepted” advertisement is not the authority’s determination.

Beijing’s guidance specifically mentions international language-teaching qualifications such as TEFL in its exemption discussion. It does not settle whether a particular inexpensive online course meets your local filing requirements. If HR asks for another course, request the reason in writing: certificate recognition, proof of training, an employer hiring preference, or a different occupational category. These are different problems with different solutions.

Describe experience accurately and resolve inconsistent advice

For each past role, make a factual list of employer, dates, subject taught and whether it was paid employment, a practicum or freelance tutoring. Do not relabel unrelated work as language teaching simply to reach two years. Ask the new employer what verification it needs before requesting letters from previous employers.

If one department says you qualify and another says you do not, ask for the actual missing item or official feedback, rather than assuming either side is dishonest. A past Chinese work permit is useful history, but it does not establish acceptance of a new job file. Keep the school’s decision to hire you distinct from the authority’s decision to authorize the work.

Move to the U.S. Z visa stage with the right document

The Embassy’s current Z visa checklist names the Notice for the Work Permit for Foreigners. A TEFL certificate, offer letter or promise from a recruiter is not an automatic substitute. Confirm the notice details against your passport before preparing the consular file.

Use a staged plan: first resolve qualification evidence with the employer, then prepare the visa application, then coordinate departure after the necessary documents are issued. Keep tentative course-start and flight dates flexible. An experience exemption removes one issue from review; it does not remove other requirements or create permission to begin teaching immediately.

Frequently asked questions

Does TEFL replace the degree requirement?

Do not treat an experience exemption as a degree exemption. Ask which qualifications support the actual filing.

Must I buy a 120-hour course immediately?

First have HR check the exact certificate and local requirements. A number of hours in an advertisement is not a work-permit approval.

Can a visa agent decide my teaching eligibility?

An assistant can organize the file; the employer and accepting authority must resolve the work-permit qualification route.
