Does a China Work Visa Require a Bachelor's Degree?

A bachelor's degree is common in China work-permit files but is not a universal rule for every foreign worker; the employer must identify the exact eligibility path before the Z visa step.

Direct answer: Not every China work-permit route has one universal bachelor's-degree requirement. A degree plus relevant experience is a common Category B path, while other professional, points, high-talent or policy routes may apply. The overseas Z visa itself is based on the issued work-permit notification; the difficult eligibility review happens in the employer's China-side work-permit process.

Separate the work permit from the Z visa

The employer first seeks the Notification Letter of Foreigner's Work Permit. Current U.S. visa instructions then list that notification as the purpose-specific document for Z. A visa office does not replace the China-side authority's employment-eligibility assessment.

If a recruiter says only that a degree is 'not needed,' ask which official category and route will be filed, in which city, for which occupation and with what substitute evidence.

When degree documents are used

Official work-permit guides list the highest academic degree or relevant approved documents and professional qualifications among possible filing materials. When a U.S. degree is relied upon, confirm whether the local authority requires an apostille, translation and consistency with the applicant's name and employment history.
