Can We Apply for Z and S1 Visas Together in the USA?
Moving to China together? Resolve the missing residence-permit question before filing a worker’s Z visa and a spouse’s S1 application in the United States.
Separate three documents that sound similar
A work-permit notice, a Z visa and a Chinese residence permit are different documents. Chicago lists the work-permit notice for the Z application; its S1 family checklist separately asks for the inviter’s passport, residence permit, invitation and relationship evidence. A dependent’s name appearing in an employer’s file should not be treated as an automatic waiver of the consular checklist.
Make a two-column inventory for the worker and accompanying spouse. Record what has actually been issued, what is still pending and which office issued each item. This is especially useful when HR uses “visa” loosely to refer to several stages. Keep the marriage certificate and each person’s identity records clearly separated.
Ask a question the office can actually answer
Explain that both applicants are in the United States, identify their state of residence, and say that the worker has a work-permit notice but no Chinese residence permit yet. Ask whether simultaneous Z/S1 filing is available, whether the employer must supply additional family-support documents, and how the online form should handle an unavailable permit number.
Save the reply with your planning notes and check that it refers to the office handling your application. A checklist from another country is not permission to use that procedure in Chicago or another U.S. jurisdiction. Likewise, a past applicant’s successful workaround is not a current instruction for your file.
Do not manufacture a permit number
Never invent a residence-permit number, upload an unrelated document as a permit, or copy a suggested placeholder without instructions. If the form blocks progress, retain the precise field label and a redacted screenshot for your inquiry. Ask how to identify the linked worker’s application accurately rather than trying random values until submission succeeds.
If the office requests a joint-application explanation, make the chronology factual: who will work, who will accompany, which documents exist and which are pending. Have HR check its own statements. An explanation can clarify a gap; it does not itself establish eligibility or replace a required original.
Plan for separate decisions and passport returns
Avoid making one partner’s fixed departure depend on an unconfirmed simultaneous-filing assumption. Discuss with the employer what happens if the office requires the worker to complete an earlier stage first. Do not switch the spouse to an unrelated category just to force both travel dates to match.
Keep separate application references and passport-return plans even when the files are coordinated. Chicago’s current procedure requires the online application to reach the passport-submission stage before physical submission. Coordination by an agent does not guarantee that both applications finish together.
Frequently asked questions
Does naming my spouse on the work-permit notice guarantee S1 acceptance?
No. Obtain instructions from the consular office for the accompanying-family situation.
Should I enter my passport number instead of a permit number?
Only follow the handling office’s specific instructions; do not assume the fields are interchangeable.
