U.S. PhD to a Shanghai Research Job: Which Work-Permit Route Should HR Check?
A doctoral degree, a postdoctoral appointment and a visiting-scholar invitation are different. Prepare the right questions before relying on a China work-permit category.
Describe the appointment precisely
Before asking whether you qualify for a visa, ask the host whether it is offering employment, a postdoctoral appointment, a visiting research arrangement or admission to a degree program. Request the planned duties, dates, employer name and funding arrangement in writing. A laboratory invitation alone may leave these basic questions unanswered.
Use your current status accurately. If you have defended but the degree is not yet awarded, tell HR both dates. If you are applying before graduation, separate the expected award date from documents already available. Do not relabel a student assistantship as completed postdoctoral employment to fit a checklist.
Ask for the provision, not just the letter A or B
The Shanghai criteria list a specific Category A provision for young talent under 40 engaged in postdoctoral research at qualifying institutions. That wording is not a blanket promise for every person with a doctorate. Have HR confirm the institution and appointment conditions and which evidence the reviewing office accepts.
The city also publishes a points framework in which a doctorate contributes education points; a degree alone is not the full assessment. A separate Shanghai government FAQ directs PhD holders to those criteria. If the institution proposes a different route, ask it to explain that route rather than combining favorable elements from several unrelated policies.
Build a review packet the institution can use
Prepare a short timeline of education and research appointments, the awarded degree information, and the proposed role. Ask which records require verification or translation before paying for document services. These are preparation suggestions, not a universal list of mandatory documents.
For publications and research achievements, distinguish accepted, published and in-progress work. Keep names and dates traceable across the résumé and supporting records. If the appointment changes from research to language teaching, request a fresh eligibility review; do not assume the research route follows you into a different occupation.
Separate the offer, work permit and visa milestones
Ask who at the institution handles the work-permit filing and which milestone must be completed before you make travel commitments. The Chinese Embassy in the U.S. lists the work-permit notice for the Z-visa category. An employment offer is not the same document.
Keep the start date provisional until the relevant steps are confirmed. Shanghai guidance should not be assumed to govern every other city’s implementation. eChinaVisa can help organize the U.S. visa side, but cannot substitute for the institution’s classification decision or the competent authority’s approval.
