China Visa Types for U.S. Applicants: L, M, Q, S, X or Z?

Choose a China visa category from the trip’s real primary purpose: tourism, business, family, study and work use different supporting documents and post-entry rules.

Direct answer: Use L for tourism, M for commercial and trade activity, Q1/Q2 for qualifying relatives of Chinese citizens or Chinese permanent residents, S1/S2 for qualifying family or private matters connected to a foreigner in China, X1/X2 for study, and Z for work. F covers exchanges and study tours rather than ordinary employment. Select the category from what you will actually do—not from which invitation is easiest to obtain.

Start with five high-intent questions

Ask whether the trip is mainly tourism, commercial activity, family visit, study or employment. Then identify who is inviting the traveler, how long the intended stay is, whether long-term residence follows after entry and which purpose-specific document exists.

The Embassy’s current U.S. list ties each category to evidence: an M application uses China trade-partner documents, Z uses the work-permit notification, higher-education X1 uses JW201/JW202 and an admission letter, and Q/S applications use the inviter’s status and relationship evidence.

Long-term and short-term pairs

Q1, S1 and X1 are long-term categories, generally connected to intended stays over 180 days and a residence-permit step after entry. Q2, S2 and X2 cover the corresponding short-term purposes within the published limits. The category letter does not itself promise a particular visa validity or stay on the issued document.

Do not choose a short-term category solely to avoid residence formalities when the real plan is long-term. Conversely, a long-term invitation should not be used for a short visit without checking whether the matching short-term category is appropriate.

Special categories need specific facts

C is for qualifying crew, G for transit, J1/J2 for journalists, R for qualifying high-level talent and D for permanent residence. These are not backup choices when an ordinary application lacks documents; each has its own official eligibility and evidence.

Does choosing Z complete the work-permit process?
