China Business Visa vs. Work Visa: M or Z for Your Trip?
Choose a China M or Z visa from the activity you will actually perform: commercial and trade activity points to M, while employment in China requires the work-permit route and Z visa.
Start with the activity—not the traveler’s title
The current Chinese Embassy in the U.S. requirements define M for commercial and trade activities and Z for people who intend to work in China. A sales director attending negotiations may fit M, while a visitor installing equipment, managing staff or delivering ongoing services may cross into work depending on the actual arrangement.
Write a plain-language list of what the traveler will do each day, who directs the work, which entity benefits, whether compensation is tied to the China activity and whether the role continues after departure. That factual description is more useful than relying on labels such as consultant, trainer or business visitor.
Evidence should match the selected route
An M application normally needs commercial-activity documents from a trade partner in China. The invitation should identify the traveler, purpose, dates, locations, relationship with the inviting party, payer and the inviter’s complete company details. A Z application instead relies on the Notification Letter for Foreigner’s Work Permit and the employer-led work authorization process.
Do not ask a supplier to issue a generic business invitation when the underlying plan is employment. A mismatch between the invitation, COVA occupation history, employment contract and answers about the trip can lead to questions or additional-document requests.
Border and post-entry obligations differ
A visa does not guarantee admission. Travelers should be able to explain the real purpose and present consistent supporting records. For long-term work, the official government guide says the worker obtains a Z visa using the work-permit notification, then completes the work permit and work-type residence permit after entry under local instructions.
If the activity sits near the line between a commercial visit and work, obtain a written description from the employer and ask the responsible authority before filing. Do not rely on a colleague’s prior admission or a community answer as the rule for a different job.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use an M visa for paid work in China?
An M visa is the commercial and trade category, not the ordinary employment route. If the activity is employment, the employer should confirm the work-permit and Z-visa process before you travel.
Is a two-week assignment automatically business travel?
No. Duration alone is not decisive. Review the actual duties, employer relationship and work authorization required for those duties.
Can I change from M to Z after arrival?
Do not plan on an in-country change. Eligibility and local procedures are case-specific; resolve the correct route before travel whenever possible.
