China Business Visa Requirements for U.S. Citizens: M Visa Guide

A China M visa is for commercial and trade activity and requires credible China-partner documents aligned with COVA, the traveler’s role and the real itinerary.

Direct answer: Use M when the real trip is commercial or trade activity. Prepare the basic U.S. application documents plus commercial-activity evidence from a trade partner in China. The invitation should identify the applicant, trip, payer and inviting company, and those facts must align with COVA.

Activities that usually point to M

Meetings, negotiations, purchasing, trade fairs and genuine supplier or factory visits may fit the M category. Employment, taking a China-based position or performing work that requires a work permit points to Z instead. Describe the activity, not merely the title business traveler.

If the trip combines several purposes, identify the principal activity and obtain advice before filing. Do not add a token meeting to disguise a tourism-only or employment trip.

Invitation letter checklist

The Embassy’s Annex 2 calls for the invited person’s identity, reason for travel, arrival and departure, places of visit, relationship with the inviting party and payer. It also calls for the inviter’s name, address, phone, official seal, legal representative or authorized signature and date.

Verify the company’s legal name and address and keep the signed or sealed document complete. The passport number, dates, cities and expense payer must match COVA and any employer letter.

Submission and outcome

Complete COVA and wait for preliminary review. Submit the physical passport only after the correct status appears. The authority may ask for more evidence or an interview and decides validity, entries and duration of stay.

eChinaVisa can pre-review the invitation and COVA, flag inconsistencies and coordinate the passport stage. It cannot promise a particular validity, number of entries, approval or fixed date.
