China Work Visa Requirements for U.S. Applicants: Z Visa Guide

The China Z visa is the work-purpose entry visa; the employer first secures the work-permit notification, and post-entry work and residence steps follow in China.

Direct answer: A U.S.-based Z applicant needs the basic COVA file and the Notification Letter for Foreigner’s Work Permit obtained through the China employer. The Z visa is not the final work-and-residence document: after entry, the worker and employer complete the work permit and applicable work-type residence permit.

Before the Z application

Confirm the legal employer, work city, job title and contract. The employer handles the China-side work-permit notification and tells the applicant which qualification, criminal-record, health and authentication documents the local authority accepts.

Do not treat an offer letter alone as the work-permit notification. The current Embassy category list specifically names the Notification Letter for Foreigner’s Work Permit for Z.

The U.S. visa stage

Complete COVA with the passport, U.S. residence/status evidence, prior China records and work-permit notification. Employment history, employer name, job title and dates should match the employer’s filing and contract.

After online preliminary review reaches the passport-submission status, submit the physical passport, barcode information page and requested originals. Official processing averages are measured from passport submission, not from the employer’s earlier permit work.

After entering China

Complete accommodation registration and follow the employer’s local schedule for the work permit and work-type residence permit. The current government guide says people working more than 90 days apply for the residence permit after entry and work within the work permit’s validity.

Do not book international travel during the transition without confirming passport availability and re-entry documentation. Keep copies and inspect all issued fields.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for Z before the employer gets the notification?

The current U.S. category requirement lists the Notification Letter for Foreigner’s Work Permit, so coordinate that employer step first.

Is Z a multiple-entry work residence document?

Do not assume so. Z is the entry visa; the post-entry work-type residence permit handles longer residence and re-entry.

Can I begin work on an M visa while waiting?

Do not use a commercial visa as a substitute for the required work authorization.
