China Z Work Visa Guide for U.S. Applicants
The Z visa is the entry visa for people intending to work in China. The employer-side work authorization normally comes first; a job offer alone is not the document listed by the Chinese Embassy for a Z application.
Employer step comes first
The employer or its authorized representative in China generally handles the work-permit-notice process with the competent Chinese authority. Confirm the exact employer legal name, job title, work location and notice validity before completing COVA. eChinaVisa can assist with the visa application, but it does not replace the employer or issue work authorization.
Z visa document checklist
- Valid Notice for the Work Permit for Foreigners.
- Current passport bio page and required blank visa pages.
- Latest Chinese visa or residence permit, when applicable.
- Proof of U.S. residence and proof of legal U.S. status for a non-U.S. citizen.
- Prior-nationality, old-passport or name-change documents when applicable.
Check consistency before submission
- Passport name, number, nationality and date of birth match the notice exactly.
- Employer, position and destination city agree with COVA and supporting records.
- The notice remains valid for the planned application timeline.
- Any correction is made through the proper issuing channel rather than altered by the applicant.
After entering China
A Z visa is generally not the final authorization for long-term residence. The holder normally completes employer onboarding, local registration and the work-type residence permit process after arrival, often within 30 days, subject to the visa annotation and current local requirements. Coordinate these steps with the employer before travel.
Do not use M for employment
M covers commercial and trade activities; it is not a substitute for authorization to take employment in China. Reddit timelines about medicals, document authentication or permit processing are individual experiences, not an official rule, and local employer-side requirements may differ.
