China Work Permit vs. Z Visa vs. Residence Permit
A China work-permit notification, Z visa, Foreigner’s Work Permit and work-type residence permit are separate documents used at different stages before and after entry.
The four-document sequence
The Notification Letter for Foreigner’s Work Permit is an employer-supported approval step before travel. The Chinese Embassy lists it as the category-specific document for Z. The Z visa is then placed in the passport and is used for the work-purpose entry covered by the decision.
After entry, the work permit authorizes employment, while the work-type residence permit governs longer residence and re-entry. The government’s working-and-living guide states that people working more than 90 days should obtain the Z visa, then apply for a work residence permit after entry and work within the work permit’s validity.
Which office controls which step
A Chinese embassy or consulate handles the overseas visa application. The employer works with the competent foreign-work authority in China for the notification and work permit. The local public-security exit-entry administration handles the residence permit. One approval does not automatically complete the others.
Ask the employer for the exact city, filing authority, intended start date and named contact handling the China-side application. Local authorities may require originals, translations, health records or additional evidence, so use the employer’s current local checklist rather than a checklist from another city.
Plan travel around the transition
Do not assume the initial Z visa can be used for repeated trips after employment begins. Confirm that the work permit and residence permit are issued, inspect their validity and keep copies before leaving China. A pending local application can affect passport availability and travel plans.
Keep COVA, the notification letter, passport details, contract, job title and employer name consistent. If the role, passport or employer changes, ask the responsible authorities what update, cancellation or new filing is required before relying on the old documents.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Z visa itself permission to work indefinitely?
No. It is the work-purpose entry visa. The work permit and, where required, work-type residence permit are separate post-entry documents.
Do I need a residence permit after entering with Z?
For work over 90 days, the current government guide says to apply for a work residence permit after entry. Follow the visa annotation and local authority instructions.
Can eChinaVisa issue a work permit?
No. eChinaVisa can assist with the U.S. visa-application stage and document consistency, but Chinese authorities decide and issue visas, work permits and residence permits.
