China M vs. F Visa: Commercial Trade or Exchange Visit?
The dividing line is purpose. The Embassy describes M for commercial and trade activities, while F covers exchanges, visits, study tours and other non-commercial exchange activities.
Classify the activity before drafting
- M examples may include supplier meetings, purchasing, trade fairs or contract-related commercial visits.
- F may fit academic, cultural, professional exchange, visit or study-tour activity that is not employment.
- Neither M nor F authorizes employment in China; work plans point to the Z/work-permit process.
- The invitation purpose, schedule and relationship should agree with the category selected in COVA.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming another applicant's category, validity or stay will apply to your case.
- Letting names, dates or purpose conflict across COVA and inviter, school or employer documents.
- Uploading cropped screenshots or incomplete pages that hide the issuer or key facts.
Can I choose M simply because my host is a company?
Not automatically. The actual activity controls; an entity can invite a person for an exchange that fits F rather than commercial trade under M.
Reddit and other community reports can reveal common confusion, but an individual outcome is not an official rule and does not replace current consular requirements.
