New Passport but JW201 or JW202 Shows the Old Number: What Should an X1 Applicant Do?
Do not edit a JW form yourself or assume two passports cure the mismatch; ask the school to update or formally link the record and confirm the responsible U.S. Visa Office's instruction.
Freeze the application before identities diverge further
Copy the new passport's name, number, issue date, expiration date, nationality and place of birth into COVA exactly. Compare those fields against the admission notice, JW form, scholarship record and any school portal profile. Make a one-page discrepancy list before contacting the school.
Do not type the old passport number into COVA to make it match the JW form, because the physical passport submitted later must be the one used for the visa application. Do not alter a PDF, cover the old number or annotate an official JW form yourself.
Ask the issuing school for an official bridge
Send the school clear scans of both passport bio pages and state the renewal date and new number. Ask which office controls the JW record and whether it can update or reissue the confirmation form. If the school proposes a letter instead, the letter should identify the applicant, both passport numbers, the reason for the change, the program and the unchanged admission.
A school email or letter does not automatically bind the Visa Office. Before relying on an alternative to a revised JW form, obtain instructions from the Chinese mission responsible for the applicant's U.S. residence and retain the response with the application file.
Recheck timing and every related document
Do not measure the remaining schedule only from the Embassy's published passport-stage average. A school correction, COVA preliminary review, supplemental request, physical submission and return shipping are separate intervals. Keep the original travel date flexible until the passport is actually ready for collection.
