2026 COVA Status Guide: Online Review, Passport Submission and Pickup

Learn what the main 2026 COVA stages mean, which status authorizes passport submission, and why an online pickup message should be read together with the receipt issued at submission.

Direct answer: The online application is only the first stage. Submit the original passport only after the responsible Chinese Visa Office changes the application to “Passport to be submitted” and follow the barcode-page and original-document instructions for the case. After physical submission, use the pickup form or receipt issued by the Visa Office together with the later online status. A status change is useful evidence of progress, but it does not create a guaranteed pickup or travel date.

Stage 1: complete COVA and enter online review

The current U.S. Embassy guide separates form preparation from physical passport submission. Applicants create an account, complete the required sections, upload readable supporting materials, review every answer and submit the application for online preliminary review. A saved draft is not a submitted application, and a submitted application normally cannot be edited until the system or reviewing office permits a correction path.

During review, a case may be returned for modification or additional uploads. Read the message inside the application instead of treating a generic estimate as a deadline. The time needed depends on completeness, the responsible office and the individual case; expedited service does not bypass online preliminary review.

Stage 2: act only on “Passport to be submitted”

The Embassy says that preliminary-review approval changes the status to “Passport to be submitted.” At that point, the applicant or an agent may submit the original passport, the printed application information page showing the barcode, and any originals required by the general checklist or the case message. Online approval is not visa issuance and does not prevent an interview or an additional-document request.

Do not mail an original passport simply because COVA has been completed or because another applicant received a faster decision. First confirm jurisdiction, the current submission method and the case-specific mailing instructions. Keep copies of the passport identity page, the barcode page, signed forms and shipment receipt.

After submission: read the receipt and online status together

When the physical package is accepted, the Visa Office normally provides a pickup form or receipt with the earliest estimated collection information. The Embassy FAQ instructs applicants to check the online status on or after that date and collect when the status shows “Passport to be collected.” The receipt remains important because the online status alone may not show every operational detail for the handoff.

A pickup-related status does not authorize travel before the passport has actually been returned and inspected. After receiving it, verify the name, passport number, visa category, entries, validity and duration of stay. Contact the issuing office promptly if a material discrepancy appears.

Build a realistic total timeline

Separate four clocks: applicant preparation, eChinaVisa review and corrections, official online and physical review, and shipping. Published official processing references apply only to the stage they describe and may be longer for individual cases. Add weekends, holidays, correction cycles and carrier time before choosing a travel buffer.
