Chinese University Degree for a China Work Visa: Applying from the USA

Earned your degree in mainland China? Separate employer-side degree evidence from the Z visa checklist before paying for a U.S. apostille or verification report.

Direct answer: Do not automatically send a mainland Chinese university degree for a U.S. apostille just because you now live in the United States. Shanghai’s current work-permit points guidance lists the original certificate for degrees obtained in mainland China. Have your employer confirm the requirements for the actual city and application category. The subsequent consular Z visa application is a separate stage: the Chinese Embassy in the United States lists the Work Permit Notice, not a degree as its replacement.

Identify who issued the degree, not just where you studied

Read the awarding institution and certificate title on the document itself. A Chinese mainland university award, an overseas university award delivered through a joint program, and a Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan award should not be treated as interchangeable. Send your employer a readable copy showing the issuer and award date before ordering any document service.

Also distinguish a graduation certificate from a degree certificate. Record which originals you hold, whether the name matches your passport and whether an earlier passport number appears in the university record. A short inventory helps the employer ask a precise question instead of applying a generic overseas-degree checklist to every applicant.

Use the mainland-degree rule within its stated scope

Shanghai’s August 2026 points-system guide separates mainland, overseas and Hong Kong/Macao/Taiwan qualifications. Its mainland-degree entry calls for the original degree or academic qualification certificate. This is a useful official starting point for a Shanghai filing, not a promise that every city or every permit route will ask for exactly the same evidence.

Ask the employer which authority will accept the work-permit application and whether it needs a scan now, the original at a later verification stage, or a specifically named verification report. If someone requests a CHSI report, ask for the exact report name and purpose. Do not assume every education report is mandatory or that any report bearing the university name will satisfy the request.

Keep the work-permit file separate from the visa file

The employer-side file establishes the basis for employment authorization. The consular visa file supports entry for the stated purpose. The Embassy’s Z category lists the Notice for the Work Permit for Foreigners, alongside the applicable basic visa documents. A diploma, employment contract or employer email should not be substituted for that notice without official instructions.

Create two folders and assign responsibility: employer and local authority for the work-permit evidence; applicant and authorized visa assistant for passport, form and consular submission preparation. Compare names, passport numbers and job information across both folders before submission. If the employer changes a key detail, check whether the visa paperwork also needs updating.

Resolve missing originals before arranging the return

If the certificate is missing or kept in China, contact the university about its official record or replacement procedure and ask the accepting authority what it will accept meanwhile. Do not create your own certificate or assume an emailed photograph meets an original-document requirement. Confirm any courier destination and handling arrangements before sending an irreplaceable original.

A mainland degree does not by itself establish eligibility for a work permit, waive all other documents or authorize you to start work. Keep the employer’s current checklist and written clarifications together. Plan the trip around confirmed progress in both stages, rather than a generic online estimate for how fast a degree can be checked.

Frequently asked questions

Does applying from the USA make my Chinese degree a U.S.-issued document?

No. Identify the awarding institution and document origin before deciding which verification procedure is relevant.

Is a CHSI report always required?

Do not assume so. Ask the accepting work-permit authority, through your employer, for the exact evidence it needs.

Can my Chinese diploma replace the Work Permit Notice for a Z visa?

The Embassy checklist names the Work Permit Notice. Treat the diploma as education evidence, not an automatic substitute.
