How Long Does a China Visa Take in the United States?
The Embassy’s average is four business days for regular service or three for urgent express service after passport submission; preparation, COVA review and shipping add time.
Build a four-part timeline
First prepare accurate identity, purpose and category documents. Second submit COVA and wait for preliminary review. Third submit the physical passport only after the correct status. Fourth allow official processing and return delivery.
A total service estimate is therefore longer than the Embassy’s passport-stage number. Plan from the travel date backward and leave margin for corrections, holidays, supplemental documents and carrier delays.
What express does and does not change
Express requests a three-business-day official processing channel for urgent situations. It does not guarantee acceptance, remove preliminary review or prevent a case from taking longer when additional review is required.
Do not buy nonrefundable travel based only on the best-case official number. Wait for the issued passport and check the visa before treating travel as confirmed.
How to reduce avoidable delay
Use the current passport as the identity baseline and keep COVA, invitation, itinerary, proof of residence and prior-China records consistent. Upload full, readable pages and respond promptly to status changes.
Confirm jurisdiction before filing and do not mail the passport early. A wrong mission, cropped upload or conflicting date can cost more time than the official processing stage.
