Can an X1 Student Work or Intern in China?

An X1 visa or study residence permit does not by itself authorize off-campus work or an internship; school approval and an official residence-permit annotation are required.

Direct answer: Not automatically. Chinese regulations say a foreign student with a study residence permit who wants off-campus work-study or an internship must first obtain the school’s approval and ask the local exit-entry authority to add the location and duration to the residence permit. Without that annotation, the student may not engage in the off-campus activity.

X1 entry is not work authorization

X1 is the long-term study entry category. After arrival, the student normally follows the school’s process for a study residence permit. Neither the visa label nor student status creates general permission to take paid employment or freelance work.

Remote work for an overseas employer should not be assumed exempt simply because payment is offshore. Describe the facts to the school and local authority before performing work while physically in China.

The required approval chain

First obtain written school approval for the specific placement. Then apply to the local exit-entry administration to add the employer or location and authorized duration to the study residence permit. The school or host should provide the locally required documents.

Do not begin merely because a company issued an offer or a professor approved informally. If the company, location, duties or dates change, ask whether the annotation must be changed before continuing.

Internship visas are not a universal shortcut

Do not treat S2, M, L or visa-free entry as a general internship category. The correct route depends on whether the person is enrolled, the school relationship, the placement, local approval and whether the activity is employment.
