Does China Have an eVisa for U.S. Citizens? What COVA Actually Does
For ordinary China visa applications filed in the United States, COVA is an online application and preliminary-review system—not a complete electronic visa that replaces passport submission.
What COVA moves online
COVA collects the application form, identity and travel answers, photo and supporting uploads. The visa office can return the file for correction or request additional material during preliminary review. Applicants should monitor the account and use the status shown in the system rather than assuming that submission equals approval.
The online stage can reduce avoidable in-person document problems, but it does not remove jurisdiction, category evidence or case-specific review. Choose the responsible mission from the applicant’s residence and keep every upload legible and consistent.
What still happens offline
The Embassy’s current instructions say the physical passport, barcode information page and any requested originals are submitted only after the system reaches the passport-submission status. The visa is then processed and, if issued, placed in or associated with the travel document under the authority’s procedure.
Do not mail a passport immediately after pressing Submit, and do not travel on a screenshot, application number or preliminary-review message. Use tracked, case-specific handling instructions and confirm how the passport will be returned.
Avoid the word eVisa when planning
Calling COVA an eVisa can cause travelers to omit passport time, shipping, original documents or the official processing period. Build the schedule in four parts: form preparation, online preliminary review, physical passport submission and official processing/return.
Other special entry arrangements should be checked separately and should not be assumed to replace the ordinary U.S. visa process. This guide answers only the standard application route described by the Chinese Embassy in the United States.

No. A COVA status or screenshot is not the visa document required for ordinary visa travel.
