China Market-Research Trip: Do You Need an L or M Visa?

Choose L for a genuine tourism trip and M when planned meetings, supplier research, trade fairs or other commercial activity are the trip's real purpose.

Direct answer: Use the trip's real primary activity—not whether you already own a company. If the visit is genuinely tourism and you will only observe public places, L is the published tourism category. If you plan supplier meetings, factory discussions, trade-fair attendance, negotiations or other commercial and trade activity, M is the closer published category and requires supporting documents from a China business partner or event organizer. Do not add a token meeting to justify M or hide planned business activity under L.

Classify the itinerary activity by activity

Write down every planned activity before selecting COVA's category. Sightseeing, museums and personal travel point to L. Scheduled meetings, product evaluation with suppliers, factory access, trade events, purchasing discussions and negotiations point to commercial or trade activity under M.

A broad goal such as learning about China or considering a future business is not specific enough. The visa office evaluates the actual purpose, itinerary and supporting documents, and retains authority to decide the category and outcome.

What an M application needs

Current U.S. instructions require commercial-activity documents issued by a trade partner in China. The invitation should identify the traveler, passport, reason for the visit, dates, places, relationship with the inviting party, expense payer and the inviting party's contact details.

A person who does not yet own a business may still have a genuine commercial visit, but the invitation and planned activity must be real. If no China partner, organizer or commercial activity exists, do not manufacture documents merely to obtain M.

Handle a mixed tourism and business trip

When both purposes are real, identify which one drives the trip and which documents prove it. Keep COVA, invitation, employer or personal explanation, cities and dates consistent; ask the responsible office if neither category clearly describes the plan.
