Can You Start COVA While You Still Need Your Passport for Another Trip?

You can prepare the online COVA stage while keeping your passport for another trip, but the original passport must be available once the application reaches the submission stage.

Direct answer: Yes. COVA and passport submission are separate stages. You may complete the online application using the current passport's exact information and clear bio-page image while retaining the physical passport. Do not hand over the original until the system instructs 'Passport to be submitted,' and do not schedule submission across another international trip because additional review can extend the passport-holding period.

What you can complete without surrendering the passport

Create the COVA account, enter the passport details exactly, upload the bio page and prepare category documents. The online review uses copies and information; starting it does not itself transfer custody of the physical passport.

Use the same passport that will receive the visa. If that passport is renewed, damaged or replaced before physical submission, stop and confirm whether the online file must be corrected or resubmitted rather than silently using a different document.

When the original passport becomes unavailable

Current U.S. instructions require the original passport after online review reaches the passport-submission status, together with the barcode information page and any other originals required for the case. International travel is not possible on the surrendered passport.

The published regular processing time is four business days after passport submission, but that is not a guaranteed return date. Further verification, corrections, holidays and return shipping can add time.

Build around both trips

List the return date from the first trip, the departure date for China, shipping days and a contingency buffer. Each family member has a separate passport and application, so one person's schedule should not be assumed to control every case.
