Does COVA's “Passport to Be Submitted” Status Expire After 30 Days?

The public U.S. guide says to submit after the status appears but does not publish one universal 30-day clock; follow the dated reminder inside your own COVA order.

Direct answer: Do not assume a 30-day deadline from a forum post alone. The Chinese Embassy's public U.S. guide says that after preliminary review the status becomes “Passport to be submitted” and the applicant or agent should submit the passport, barcode page and required originals; that public page does not state one universal expiration period. Your own COVA order may display an additional dated reminder—if it gives 30 calendar days or another deadline, follow that case-specific instruction and contact the responsible office before it expires if you cannot comply.

Read the order, not only the status label

Open the order details and any “Additional Reminders from the Consul” rather than relying on the short status shown on the dashboard. Save a dated screenshot of the barcode page and every instruction that appears with it.

The status means online preliminary review has reached the physical-submission stage; it is not final visa approval. Do not count from the date you first created a draft unless your own instruction explicitly says to do so.

If another trip delays passport submission

Do not surrender the passport across another international trip. Compare the exact deadline in the order with your return date, office days, delivery method and a contingency buffer. If the timing is impossible, ask the responsible visa office whether a later submission or a new COVA order is required.

Published regular processing begins after passport submission and may take longer for individual review. A 30-day submission window, when shown, is not a promise that the passport will be returned within that period.

Submit a complete physical package

Bring or deliver the original passport, printed application information page with barcode and every original or supplementary document required in the order. Follow the correct office's current submission method because mail and in-person arrangements differ by jurisdiction.
