China Work Permit Renewal: When Should the Employer Start?
Current official guidance tells the employer to submit a China work-permit extension 30 days before expiry; the work-type residence permit has its own extension deadline.
Track two expiration dates
The work permit authorizes employment, while the work-type residence permit authorizes residence and re-entry. Their dates may differ. Put both dates, the employment-contract end date and the employer’s internal deadline in one calendar.
A pending work-permit extension does not automatically extend the residence permit. The employer and employee should confirm which approval or receipt the exit-entry authority needs for the residence filing.
Prepare before the 30-day filing point
Current Shanghai guidance lists the extension form, employment contract or certificate, passport and valid work-type residence permit among core documents, with additional records for some applicants. Other cities may use different local checklists.
Review passport validity, contract dates, employer registration, job title and any changed personal information early. A passport replacement or employer change may require a modification rather than a routine extension.
Avoid travel and work gaps
Ask whether the passport will be needed and whether international travel is advisable during residence processing. Keep application receipts, but do not assume every receipt permits re-entry or employment.
If a deadline is at risk, contact both competent authorities before expiry. Do not backdate contracts, continue working on an expired permit or rely on an unverified community workaround.
