China Work Permit Salary Requirement: Is There a Minimum?

China does not use one published nationwide salary minimum for every foreign work-permit route, but salary affects points, eligibility evidence and later tax-record checks.

Direct answer: There is no single salary figure that guarantees every China work permit. Compensation can add points, support a particular talent route and be tested against the employment contract and tax records. The employer must identify the route and local standard before treating any monthly salary as sufficient.

How salary enters the assessment

The published points table awards different points according to annual salary paid in China. Some specialized routes also use remuneration or local average-salary multiples. These are route-specific measurements, not a universal visa price or nationwide minimum.

Use the gross or annual figure exactly as the responsible authority instructs. Do not convert allowances, foreign payroll or reimbursements into salary without the employer confirming how each amount will be reported.

Contract, application and tax must align

The proposed salary should match the contract, employer filing and any supporting letter. After employment begins, tax records may be compared with the approved remuneration, especially when a permit is renewed.

A high salary cannot cure an ineligible employer, false experience, occupation mismatch or missing document. A lower salary is not automatically disqualifying if another lawful route applies, but it still must be truthful.

Ask HR for a route-specific calculation

Request a written note showing the category, route, salary basis, points claimed and supporting records. Confirm whether housing or bonuses count and who will handle payroll and tax reporting.

eChinaVisa can organize the U.S.-side Z-visa file after the work-permit notification is issued. It cannot set the employer's salary, determine the China-side work category or guarantee approval.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one minimum monthly salary for all foreign workers?

No. Published criteria use different routes and local measurements.

Does a higher salary guarantee Category A?

No. Salary is only one factor or route component and all evidence remains reviewable.

Do tax records matter after approval?

They can matter at renewal or compliance review, so approved and actually reported compensation should align.
